Ingredients
4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup milk
3 tbsp butter
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tsp garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and whisk in the flour until smooth.
- Gradually add the heavy cream and milk, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth and thickened.
- Stir in the garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- In a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, layer the sliced potatoes and cheese sauce, starting with a layer of potatoes and ending with a layer of cheese sauce.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden brown.
Quick Notes
- Use a mandolin(slicer) or food processor to get even and thin potato slices.
- For a twist, you can add diced ham or bacon in between the layers of potatoes and cheese sauce.
- To make this dish ahead of time, assemble it up to step 5, then cover and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
